It gives you a ball park figure. It is compared against the average basal metabolic rate for your body size and weight. The only accurate way is through testing at a facility. But it’s not cost efficient.

Not accurate at all. Even if you enter your information, the machines base information is sometimes inaccurate. You can go on one machine and do a workout and then go on the machine next to it, do the exact same workout and get different results. Besides heart rate and calories burned, the machines are accurate in everything else. Heart rate is easily measured manually though. Calories burned depends quite a few factors, you cannot be completely accurate when figuring this amount.

Most websites are consistent with their calories burned calculators.
