I never learned to swim, but really want to and am willing to take lessons but don’t want it to be embarrassing. How should I seek out an instructor that can give private lessons?

If I were you, I would talk to the coach of a Master swim group (an adult swim group) at your local gym. I’m sure they would be willing to give you lessons. If not, they will more than likely know someone else who can teach you how to swim.

I saw an ad in the local newpaper regarding swimming lessons at the public pool. When I got there, I saw that I was the only adult who was wanting lessons, so I sat on the sidelines until the class was done. Then I approached the instructor. We talked and set up a schedule for me to take private lessons. She also recommended that I go to her water aerobics classes at the pool, to help me get used to being in the water. That was helpful, and actually a lot of fun!
